As someone whose first credit card was an American Express, it has sat comfortably at the forefront of the inside of my wallet ever since. The fact that over 99% of merchants in the United States accept Amex, along with the unparalleled travel perks (and points), stellar customer service, and exclusive access to lounges and other experiences definitely contributed to this as well.

However, after moving back to Hong Kong in 2020, I learned that one of the most recognizable credit card brands in the world actually might need to take a back seat in my wallet due to the lack of acceptance at restaurants, cafes, shops, and other establishments.

While American Express has enjoyed a presence in Hong Kong for several decades now, even offering dedicated personal, corporate, and branded Amex cards tailored to Hong Kong residents, I estimate that less than 50% of all merchants in Hong Kong accept American Express.

While most major mid-range and fine-dining restaurants, hotels, department stores, shopping malls, and bars in Hong Kong accept American Express, it still hasn’t achieved credit card ubiquity amongst businesses like Visa and Mastercard.

Below, I’ll provide a breakdown of the common spots that accept American Express in Hong Kong along with where it definitely is not accepted.

Having moved to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in mid-2018, with little to no knowledge of Vietnam or Vietnamese customs, I was curious to see if the foreign influence had permeated the country’s service industry – specifically in the context of tipping. After all, Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh City) is Vietnam’s most populous and cosmopolitan city where Western influence has solidified deep roots in the gastronomic landscape.

As an American, who has at one point in his life been shamed for refusing to tip a Starbucks barista in the U.S. after ordering ahead via the app and picking up the drink myself, I fully acknowledge that the cult of tipping culture in some Western countries (the U.S. is the main culprit, of course), has become utterly preposterous and nonsensical. This is not a stance against tipping rather I feel the line between doing one’s job vs. being compensated extra is becoming thinner and thinner.

So, it was a huge sigh of relief when I landed in Vietnam and quickly caught on that Vietnamese tipping culture is very different from that in the United States. The general rule is that it is not customary to tip in Vietnam. While the country has undergone a substantial economic and social transformation, with tourism also crawling back to pre-pandemic levels, tipping is still not expected in Vietnam.

As an American, the concept of tipping is at the forefront of almost every single interaction. From standard dine-in restaurants to Starbucks and other artisanal coffee shops, taxi drivers, hotels, and even takeout, I fully acknowledge tipping culture has gotten out of control. I was even prompted to tip at a liquor store once after picking up my own booze and paying at the counter. I’m not against tipping but the line is becoming blurred more and more when it comes to requesting a tip vs. what is expected in the ordinary course of one’s job description.

Frankly, America’s tipping culture is a driving reason why I love eating, drinking, and living in Hong Kong – as tipping in Hong Kong has not even come half as close to reaching the ubiquity (or absurdity) it has in the United States. Except for select situations or events, tipping in Hong Kong is not expected – the default rule is that you don’t need to tip in Hong Kong. Tipping just isn’t part of the culture. It is, however, always appreciated.

In my opinion, the only ‘mandatory’ time to tip in Hong Kong is during one specific cultural event and festival – Chinese New Year. However, there are several other key situations where I tip in Hong Kong, which I’ll walk you through below. I’ll also break down several key situations I don’t tip or aren’t typically situations most people tip in Hong Kong.

Having lived in Hong Kong for six-plus years, the below tipping practices and situations are based on my personal experience. I was inspired to write this post as we’re currently in the thick of Golden Week in Hong Kong, one of the busiest times of the year where hotel prices are through the roof and available rooms are few and far between. Even as someone who has lived in Hong Kong for six-plus years, I have been through it all before, trying to find an affordable, mid-range hotel in Hong Kong that doesn’t break the bank nor compromise on comfort.

Moving back to Hong Kong amid a global pandemic saw me quarantine in a hotel for two weeks, followed by a month in limbo while trying to nail down an apartment. My lease expired in 2023, after which I spent six months out of Hong Kong and returned to yet another month-long stint in a hotel. During my time traveling to and living in Hong Kong, I’ve had to figure out a roster of affordable, mid-range hotels that won’t bankrupt me and also don’t have me living with the roaches or like the kids from Oliver Twist.

Depending on the time of year, hotel prices can definitely vary in Hong Kong. The hotels below generally start anywhere from USD 50 to USD 70 for a standard room. I should note that I, at points, have paid even less than this and up to USD 125 per night. I was inspired to write this article thanks to a guy I sit next to at my coworking space. You might not know this based on my name, ‘Big Body’, however, Big Body has always been a runner at heart. It started back in my sophomore year of high school when I was nicknamed ‘Taco’, thanks to a love for 89-cent tacos from Taco Bell and a portly frame. I think based on my bodacious thighs and round face, “Double Stuffed Burrito” may have been a more fitting nickname. Several soccer teammates of mine started a running club so that I could slim up and ask my high school crush to semi-formal.

The running club’s name? G.T.S. – Get. Taco. Sexy. We would run 5 km, two to three times per week, with the membership swelling from just several of us to over 10 runners at our peak. It worked and I stuffed my slightly less plump frame into an off-the-rack suit from Men’s Wearhouse to boogie the night away with my Catholic school queen. Since then, I’ve had an on-again, off-again relationship with running, logging anywhere from 0 to 2500 kilometers per year (at one point, going two years without any movement) – after which I resembled the love child of a Bulgarian powerlifter and John Candy.

I moved to Osaka at the height of my runner’s journey and was eager to see what the city had to offer. From my first night run around Osaka Castle to the interweaving, scenic paths along Osaka’s riverside, lush and manicured parks, and historic, vibrant temple runs, I was hooked. Osaka’s sheer number of accessible running routes (in and around the city), geared towards novices, seasoned runners, and everyone in between lays an inclusive foundation for one of the best running communities I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing.

Japan is a country of unparalleled convenience and affordability when it comes to travel. During my three months living in Japan, I can’t say there was a single moment when I panicked about trying to make my way across the city (I was based in Osaka) or travel from one city to another.

You’ll find bullet trains that can get you from one side of the country to the other in less than 12 hours (ex. You can do the 1600 km journey from Osaka to Sapporo in half a day), reliable and prompt city buses and shuttles that cover most major attractions and neighborhoods, local subway lines that weave through cities and towns that make my home state in the U.S. look like it’s living in the 1700s, and everything in between. In Japan, you’d be hard-pressed to find yourself without transportation options.

However, it’s always important to have a fallback, in case all else fails or public transportation is closed. Or if you have more luggage than is feasibly possible to transport without having a nervous breakdown. In most countries, I keep Uber in my back pocket as a failsafe. But it’s only available in just over 70 countries. What about Japan? Is there Uber in Japan? What about other ride-hailing apps?

Yes, there is Uber in Japan and it is generally an effective method of transportation. However, there are regulatory limits to Uber and its existence in Japan. Furthermore, it’s considerably more expensive than public transportation, and in my humble opinion, only worth using in a select few situations – as Japan’s public transportation network is one of the most affordable and efficient in the world.
