London Coffee Society: The Best Avocado Toast in Budapest
As I mentioned in my post on the Wrap Shack in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, sometimes a restaurant or meal is just so good, that I immediately have to write about it. That’s the case with London Coffee Society and their avocado toast. But, what makes their avocado toast worth its weight in gold? Find out below.
Now, before I get into the reasons why London Coffee Society is absolutely worth checking out when you visit (or move) to Budapest, and why the avocado toast has me doing that Russian squat dance in celebration, you need to check out Aliz’s Wonderland’s blog post on avocado toast 101 in Budapest. This should be your Budapest Avo Toast Bible.
London Coffee Society: Electric & Cozy
I’m not writing this article immediately after my first time at London Coffee Society, I’m writing it after my fifth. For the first several times, I was swamped with other work, and had a friend in town, so was mostly nursing Bull’s Blood wine hangovers and out of commission for Pale Ale Travel writing. However, today got my smashed avocado juices flowing, and I had to share.
Strolling up to London Coffee Society, it’s not uncommon to see a group of twenty-somethings waiting patiently outside for access to a cozy, yet lively interior. That’s how you know it’s good. London Coffee only sports several downstairs tables, a counter, and upstairs seating (several tables), but the turn-around is quite fast. This is a get-in and get-out breakfast and brunch spot for professional brunchers.
At the counter, you’re presented with every major breakfast and sweet bread you grew up eating, but with a twist. From chocolate banana bread, to specialty coffee cakes, all the way to lemon bars, they’ve got it all. London Society’s coffee is also worth coming here in itself. I don’t consider myself to have the most refined palate when it comes to coffee, but the fact that LCS’s coffee is smooth in taste and does not leave a chalky after-taste, it is exactly what I like. Plus, their lattes are proportioned well and not overly milky, so expect to feel wired after your first.
Now, onto the main enchilada…Ermmm…I mean, the main avocado? The avocado toast that launched a thousand ships (sorry Helen).

So there’s no confusion, I am talking about London Coffee Society’s smashed avocado on sourdough with poached eggs and serrano ham – as there’s several other avocado toast options (ex. With salmon cream cheese, fresh avocado slices, and salmon beetroot).
First, let’s start with the poached eggs, as this is surprisingly something a lot of restaurants I brunch at haven’t quite perfected. London Coffee Society sits two, fat poached eggs atop your smashed avocado, which break into a perfect runny yolk when speared with a knife. Nothing is worse than an overcooked egg that doesn’t break. You want a stream of yolk mixing in with the crevices of bread. 10/10 by London Coffee Society on this.
Second, London Coffee Society does not skimp on the avocado portion spread across a quality sourdough. I’m honestly not sure what the avocado situation is in Hungary, but these are very much lighter and slightly acidic (as opposed to nuttier avocados), which pairs well with the balsamic vinegar salad. Some restaurants and brunch spots over-season avo toast, which I think takes away from the deliciousness of the natural fats and tastes inherent in an avocado. Not London Coffee Society.
They let the avocado do the talking.
Third, the avocado and bread combo never became mushy – even after ordering it for takeaway several times. In my book, structural integrity is important when it comes to avo toast, as I’m a proponent of eating it with these two pale and stumpy hands of mine.
Finally, the serrano ham is a nice touch, as it’s meat, and I can’t ever say no to any dish that includes unexpected meat.

Price-wise, this comes in just under HUF $1,500, or about USD $5, which is a steal for the portion-size and quality. Once again, it may be packed when you show up, but turnover time is relatively fast! This is a get-in get-out spot.
Side note: I should mention that one of my best friends who is a professional cook, said LCS makes one of the best scrambled eggs on toast he has ever had – the very antithesis to those dry, chewy eggs we would eat growing up. London Coffee Society’s are fluffy, soft, and a tad runny.

Pro Tip: Craving chicken paprikash instead? I’ve got you covered. Check out my review of Lado Cafe – where I dug into a chicken paprikash I can only describe as “divine.”
Big Body is a voracious lov…eater, a cowardly fighter, and a self-proclaimed curry goat BBQ-eating champion (don’t forget the donkey milk) who likes Stoicism, baseball, and writing in the third person.
