5 Affordable Hotels in Hong Kong I’ve Personally Tested For Convenience, Comfort, & Cleanliness

I was inspired to write this post as we’re currently in the thick of Golden Week in Hong Kong, one of the busiest times of the year where hotel prices are through the roof and available rooms are few and far between. Even as someone who has lived in Hong Kong for six-plus years, I have been through it all before, trying to find an affordable, mid-range hotel in Hong Kong that doesn’t break the bank nor compromise on comfort.

Moving back to Hong Kong amid a global pandemic saw me quarantine in a hotel for two weeks, followed by a month in limbo while trying to nail down an apartment. My lease expired in 2023, after which I spent six months out of Hong Kong and returned to yet another month-long stint in a hotel. During my time traveling to and living in Hong Kong, I’ve had to figure out a roster of affordable, mid-range hotels that won’t bankrupt me and also don’t have me living with the roaches or like the kids from Oliver Twist.

Depending on the time of year, hotel prices can definitely vary in Hong Kong. The hotels below generally start anywhere from USD 50 to USD 70 for a standard room. I should note that I, at points, have paid even less than this and up to USD 125 per night. For the convenience, amenities, and quality, there aren’t many better bang-for-your-buck Hong Kong hotels out there.

Here are five affordable hotels in Hong Kong that I’ve personally stayed at – all for more than two weeks each – so that you can spend your money on what really matters when visiting Hong Kong, the food and drink (and Disneyland?). But first, a pros and cons list for each so that you can easily reference and/or scan the post.

Should You Stay at the Bishop Lei International House?

If you read any of my other posts on Pale Ale Travel then you know for the first 6 months of 2023, I was located between Saigon, Bangkok, and Osaka (the latter being my new favorite city on earth). Prior to leaving, my apartment lease ended so coming back and getting resituated was a bit of an arduous and overwhelming process.

However, providing refuge in the quest for my reclamation of stability in Hong Kong was the Bishop Lei International House. Located at 4 Robinson Road, in the prestigious Mid-Levels, Bishop Lei is a convenient, affordable, 3-star hotel that is perfect for budget travelers and those wanting to immerse themselves a stone’s throw away from all the action of Hong Kong Island.

Having lived in Hong Kong for six-plus years, all of it on Robinson Road (until recently), I’ve inevitably stayed at the Bishop Lei more than a handful of times – with my most recent stint clocking in at just under one month. While it definitely is not the sexiest or most luxurious hotel by any stretch of the imagination, Bishop Lei does hold its own when it comes to hospitality, amenities (outdoor pool, restaurant, and exercise room), and convenience (I can’t state this enough).

Here’s a little bit about my most recent stay in the Bishop Lei International House and what I particularly enjoyed (and what I didn’t).

P.S. If you couldn’t already tell, the feature image of Hong Kong’s skyline was taken from my room at Bishop Lei.

Review: Solitaire Hotel on Sukhumvit 11, Bangkok – a Luxurious Urban Retreat to Unwind in Style

During my self-imposed Hong Kong moratorium I decided to spend one month-plus in Bangkok, Thailand. And, the stay would not have been complete if I didn’t stay at one of my favorite hotels in all of Asia – the Solitaire Bangkok Hotel on Sukhumvit 11. This 4-star hotel, located a stone’s throw away from the nightlife and action of one of Bangkok’s most notorious nightlife districts, is always my go-to stay in Bangkok.

I spent the entire month posted up in this gem of a hotel, working, battling strep throat, and recovering after extensive ‘eating days’ in one of the best cities for food in the world. Here’s an honest review of what I loved and liked (there isn’t much I really took issue with).

Hilton Munich Airport Hotel Review: Luxury, Convenience, & a Biergarten

If you’ve read any of my other blog posts on Pale Ale Travel, then you definitely know I’m a big fan of Hilton chain hotels. Hilton hotels are chic, conveniently located, moderately priced (we aren’t talking the Four Seasons here), and staffed with some of the utmost professionals.

After making my way up to the Schengen Area from Croatia, where I spent a great night at the Canopy By Hilton in Zagreb after my near 3 months in Split, I found myself ready to depart Europe (flying out of Munich, Germany). As I was exhausted, wanted to slug a few beers, and wake up the next morning with absolutely no worries, I opted to book the Hilton Munich Airport Hotel at Franz Josef Strauß Airport– and I was not disappointed.

Below, I walk through why you should definitely consider booking a night at the Hilton Munich Airport Hotel before you fly out of Munich. Hint: there’s a beer garden close by.

4-Star Canopy By Hilton Zagreb City Centre Croatia Hotel Review

During my six month stint in Europe, I mainly stuck to Airbnbs (and found some great ones). But sometimes you just want to treat yourself for one or two nights. I did that during the last night of my near-three month stay in Croatia and booked the Canopy By Hilton Zagreb. I wasn’t disappointed.

Below, I’m going to take you through why you should definitely consider booking the Canopy By Hilton if you are passing through Zagreb or staying the week.

Capri By Fraser: a 4-Star Boutique Business Hotel in Phnom Penh

If you’re looking for one of the best hotels in Phnom Penh to stay in for a short business trip, rooftop jacuzzis, and great view of the former ‘Pearl of Asia’, I recommend checking out the Capri By Fraser – formerly known as ‘Lumiere Hotel’.

Located in the heart of bustling Phnom Penh, the Capri By Fraser is a boutique business hotel for travelers looking for all Western amenities and luxuries in Cambodia. I stayed at Capri By Fraser for 8 nights when making a visa run from Vietnam, and couldn’t have been happier with my stay. It was a quiet refuge no more than stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of it all along the riverside.

Below, I’m going to break down some of my favorite things about the Capri By Fraser, and why I think it’s not only one of the best bang-for-your-buck business hotels, but one of the best hotels in Phnom Penh period
